A postnatal period is the period beginning immediately after the separation of placenta and extending up to six weeks, otherwise called as puerperium or puerperal period. Postnatal Care is named as Sutika Paricharya in Ayurvedic classics. Garbhini(Pre Natal Care) and Sutikaparicharya (Post Natal Care)are very well described by our ancient Ayurvedic scholars starting from Samhita period.
Proper Sutikaparicharya causes complete involution of uterus and other pelvic organs, so that they reach to their pre pregnant state. Aim of Puerperium is to maintain maternal and infant health preventing any complication and to establish infant feeding. Abhyanga (Ayurvedic Massage) have been described in almost all of Ayurvedic classics. Abhyanga causes toning up of muscles of pelvic floor, abdomen and Low back.
A special diet plan for the Prasuta is recommended for this period to make good the loss of the reproductive fluids, dhatus and blood during the pregnancy and delivery. The Prasuta should consume light yet nourishing food during the Sutika period. Proper adherence to this regimen results in faster recuperation and restoration of the health of the mother. Adequate care and precautions along with the prescribed regimen ensures that the mother regains her physical charm.
